The city of Skopje is acquiring 3,300 new waste containers, with garbage trucks and public transport buses next on the list. The Mayor of Skopje, Orce Gjorgjievski, announced that the installation of the containers throughout the city is set to begin within the next 7 to 10 days.
Appearing on 4TV, Gjorgjievski stated that the new containers were purchased at half the price of previous procurements. At the same time, according to his figures, both the Public Enterprise “Communal Hygiene” and JSP Skopje have saved approximately half a million euros each on fuel costs. The most pressing issue remains the machinery fleet at “Communal Hygiene.” Currently, about 50 trucks are operational in the field, down from the previous count of around 70.
Gjorgjievski apologized to the residents of Skopje for delays in waste collection and acknowledged that the existing fleet is insufficient to service the city fully and on time. The solution, according to his announcements, lies in the procurement of new trucks. Their arrival is pending a Government decision and an urgent session of the Skopje City Council.
Changes are also being announced for JSP. Currently, more than 200 buses are operating on Skopje’s streets—an increase of about 50 compared to the previous period, according to Gjorgjievski. The tender process for the procurement of new buses has been concluded, paving the way for the renewal of the aging fleet.
According to the mayor, savings of around half a million euros on fuel have also been achieved at the “Komunalna Higiena” (Municipal Hygiene) company. The first thing citizens should notice on the ground is the new waste containers, the installation of which is scheduled for the next 7 to 10 days.
