Skopje, North Macedonia – What happens when tourism meets artificial intelligence, virtual reality, data analytics, and a new generation of internationally minded students?
At the University of Skopje, the answer was “Smart Skills for Smart Future—Digitalization in Tourism Business,” an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme designed to explore how technology is reshaping the way we travel, experience destinations and do business in tourism.
Implemented in 2023, the programme brought together students and academics from North Macedonia, Croatia and Bulgaria, transforming the University of Skopje into an international hub for several days of learning, collaboration, and exchange.
But this was not a traditional classroom experience.
Participants explored some of the technologies that are redefining contemporary tourism—from artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things to blockchain, digital marketing, CRM, augmented and virtual reality, online booking systems, tourism analytics and data-driven decision-making.
The programme combined physical mobility in Skopje with digital learning, interactive sessions, teamwork and experiences beyond the classroom, including visits to tourism destinations. This allowed students to connect technological concepts with the realities of tourism and to experience first-hand the value of learning across borders.
THREE COUNTRIES, ONE VISION

One of the strongest dimensions of “Smart Skills for Smart Future” was its international character.
Students from North Macedonia, Croatia and Bulgaria learned side by side, exchanging perspectives from different cultural, academic and tourism environments. The programme demonstrated that the future of tourism cannot be viewed solely through national borders – just as tourism itself has never been confined by them.
Through the Erasmus+ framework, the initiative combined mobility, intercultural exchange and digital competencies in a learning model designed around the changing needs of the tourism sector.
MORE THAN DIGITAL SKILLS
Digital transformation is not simply about introducing new technology. It is about people knowing how to use technology intelligently, creatively and responsibly.
For this reason, the programme placed students at the centre of the transformation. Alongside technological knowledge, participants developed collaboration, adaptability, problem-solving and intercultural communication skills – competencies increasingly important for future careers in tourism.
The programme also encouraged students to think differently about destinations, visitors and tourism businesses: how data can support better decisions, how technology can enhance visitor experiences and how innovation can make tourism businesses more responsive and competitive.
SMALL INVESTMENT, LASTING VALUE
With a programme little investment “Smart Skills for Smart Future,” demonstrated how targeted international cooperation can generate value far beyond its financial scale.
Its impact lies in the knowledge transferred, international connections established, and competencies carried forward by participants into their future academic, professional, and entrepreneurial activities.
Most importantly, the model is transferable. Combining international mobility, blended learning, digital competencies and destination-based experience offers an approach that can be replicated and further developed in tourism education elsewhere.
EDUCATION THAT ANTICIPATES CHANGE
For the University of Skopje, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to internationalisation and to education that responds to change rather than simply observes it.
As tourism continues to evolve through artificial intelligence, digital platforms, new customer expectations and increasingly data-driven business models, universities have an important role to play in ensuring that the next generation enters the sector ready not only for the jobs of today, but also for opportunities that are still emerging.
“Smart Skills for Smart Future” was built around a simple idea: we should not only teach students about the future of tourism—we should prepare them to help shape it.
