On September 10 and 11, 2026, the Embassy in Paris hosted a formal reception to mark the National Day — September 8—which also commemorated the 35th anniversary of the country’s independence.
The event took place at the Embassy and was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and UNESCO, as well as prominent figures from political, public, and cultural life and representatives of the Macedonian diaspora. The reception opened with a striking rendition of the national anthems, performed by the young Macedonian singer Jovana Krstevska, who lives and works in Paris.
Ambassador prof. dr. Igor Nikolov addressed the attendees, welcoming the guests and reflecting on the historical significance of September 8.
It is with immense pride and joy that I express my deepest gratitude on this momentous day, when the citizens of Macedonia—bravely and responsibly—fulfilled the pledge of their ancestors and, through a democratic process involving a referendum and an overwhelming majority, declared their support for a sovereign and independent state, Ambassador Nikolov stated.
He emphasized that the vision is for Macedonia to be a stable and prosperous European state, but, above all, a homeland where young people choose to start families, create, and build their futures. “There is a saying: ‘Nations write their own history, while diplomats have the privilege of bringing its chapters closer together.’ This evening is a wonderful example of diplomacy that prioritizes the culture, knowledge, and human connections linking the two countries,” the Ambassador said.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Nikolov presented a certificate to the renowned French medical professor and academic prof. Ziad Massy, confirming his appointment as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.
The Ambassador emphasized that this recognition testifies to Professor Massy’s academic excellence and dedication, as well as the commitment of university institutions to fostering knowledge exchange, scientific cooperation, and ties between the Macedonian and French medical communities.
Professor, please accept our heartfelt congratulations. We are convinced that your contribution will enrich the teaching, research, and collaborative efforts at the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje, Nikolov stated.
The gala evening was further enhanced by a performance from the eminent Macedonian opera artists, the Durlovski duo. Their performance, delivered before numerous guests from the diplomatic corps, added a powerful and moving artistic dimension to the commemoration of the Macedonian national holiday and showcased the richness of Macedonian culture to the French and international public.
The Independence Day commemoration in Paris spanned two days and featured several events. On September 10, Igor and Ana Durlovski gave a concert for the diplomatic corps, while on September 11, the Embassy opened its doors to the diaspora.
