Skopje marks anniversary of the 1963 earthquake

Skopje today marked the anniversary of the devastating 1963 earthquake that killed over 1,000 people and destroyed much of the residential areas in the city.

State officials visited the memorial cemetery in Butel, where the victims of the earthquake are buried. An exhibition was opened this evening at the Museum of Skopje, at the site of the destroyed railway station which remains as memorial of the tragedy.
