Doctor Kedev resigns as advisor to Minister Aliu because of the slow response to the heart surgeries scandal

Leading Macedonian cardiologist Sasko Kedev told Republika today that he withdrew from the council set up by Healthcare Minister Azir Aliu, citing the slow response to the scandal around the unnecessary heart surgeries that were carried out. Doctor Kedev blew the whistle on the scandal, informing the public that numerous patients have been operated in private clinics, often receiving public funding, even though their condition did not warrant a surgery.

A commission was set up to examine the cases and it determined that a dozen surgeries were carried out without need – more than half of the cases that were examined. Meanwhile, a commission of foreign experts that was also supposed to investigate the situation, has not been set up yet.
