The Food and Veterinary Agency of Kosovo (AUVK) announced today the results of laboratory analyzes of samples of mandarins originating from Albania and some other cargoes. Tests have confirmed that the products meet international food safety standards and are safe for consumption.

“Representative samples were taken from six shipments of different origins, four of which are from Albania. Laboratory analyzes were carried out in accordance with European Union regulations, including the Maximum Residue Levels (MRL) no. 396/2005 and other substances, such as those for chlorpyrifos and phosmet pesticides. The method used, EN 15662:2018, confirmed that all loads are within the permitted limits,” said the AHV of Kosovo.

Although there were no notifications from the RASFF system for the Kosovo market for the products in question, AHVK acted immediately to ensure consumer safety. After the tests were completed, the tangerines were put on the market and for consumption.

AHWC assured that controls will continue rigorously, including sampling and analysis at all inspection stages. Every product intended for the Kosovo market is monitored in accordance with legal standards to guarantee food safety and the health of citizens.

A few days ago, the European Food Safety System raised the alarm because of the large amount of tangerines coming from Albania. In recent weeks, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Italy and Lithuania, countries that imported fruit from Albania, returned the loads to the border after the control. The tangerines contained residues of several substances dangerous to human health and prohibited for sale in the EU.

In particular, high residues of chlorpyrifos and phosmet pesticides, which have side effects, affect brain development in children, disorders of the nervous and endocrine systems, as well as an increased risk of heart disease and cancer.
