Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel emphasized Bulgaria’s lack of bilateral issues with Macedonia regarding EU integration. Gabriel outlined that progress on Skopje’s European path involves more than just adopting constitutional amendments; compliance with the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbourliness, and Cooperation, along with two protocols signed with Bulgaria, are also crucial.

Speaking at the Parliamentary committee on foreign policy, Gabriel highlighted Bulgaria’s stance in guiding Macedonia toward EU membership, emphasizing the importance of meeting obligations. Despite technical meetings in Sofia and Skopje, no significant progress was observed, leading Bulgaria to assert its position within the European Union.

Gabriel reiterated that for Macedonia to become an EU candidate, fulfilling self-undertaken obligations, including a plan for minority protection, is imperative. This stance reflects Bulgaria’s commitment to ensuring that aspiring members adhere to their obligations on the path to EU integration.
