Parliament must agree on the election date, aiming for May 8 for both presidential and parliamentary elections. If so, the election announcement would occur by February 28, and a caretaker government should form by January 28, as outlined by Speaker Talat Xhaferi on Monday.
If May 8 is the chosen date, the President’s inauguration might occur on May 12, and the new Parliament could convene by May 28. By late June 2024, the new government could be established. The Parliament is open to discussions but emphasizes the need to consider timeframes and activities.
The Parliament Speaker clarified that under procedural rules, the Speaker’s election happens in the third session day. Then, the newly elected Speaker informs the President of the majority support and starts government formation per the Constitution.
Xhaferi refrained from commenting on caretaker government nominations but stressed the need to elect a new Speaker and nominate a new MP before dissolution.
Regarding a recent incident during a session where an MP damaged property, Xhaferi stated the estimated damage exceeds €9,000 and emphasized the responsible MP will cover these costs.
