This is the first time, since the independence of Macedonia, that a major foreign delegation arrived and was welcomed without the Macedonian guard of honor and without the Macedonian anthem, VMRO-DPMNE President Hristijan Mickoski said about the humiliating event during the Alexis Tsipras meeting with Zoran Zaev in Skopje. The anthem was left out due to Greek issues with its text which speaks about Macedonia and the Macedonian struggle, but Zaev’s Government claimed it is due to the lack of time.
Their excuse? It’s brutal, shallow and irresponsible. They have hundreds of paid news spinners who they got to push the narrative that the plane was late and there as no time for the anthem – for one of the three national symbols of Macedonia. No Zaev, the reason for what happened is different – the reason is the treaty you signed. You are ashamed of your people, you are ashamed to hear a song about Macedonia with your new friend. Tell the truth for once, Mickoski said during the VMRO election rally in Resen.
The incident during the Tsipras visit led to a bitter – comical situation during the SDSM rally later in Skopje, when SDSM supporters were unsure whether to stand up during the national anthem. SDSM candidate Stevo Pendarovski had to signal to his supporters to rise during the anthem, which was so noticeably absent during the Tsipras visit only hours earlier.
