During her rally in Skopje’s downtown Centar area, opposition presidential candidate Gordana Siljanovska – Davkova used one of the main arguments in favor of her election – that it will force Zoran Zaev to agree to holding early general elections.
Our victory at the presidential elections will open a new path toward early general elections. In such elections we are sure to win, and then we will begin a new era in the Macedonian history. Let’s give Prime Minister Zaev a chance, for once in his life, to fulfill a promise he made and let us hold early general elections, Siljanovska said.
Zaev initially agreed that if his candidate Stevo Pendarovski loses to Siljanovska, early general elections will have to be called. He then walked his statement back, only to again agree to it during a televised debate with opposition leader Hristijan Mickoski. Siljanovska again appealed to the conservative opponents of the name deal who intend to boycott the elections – “the more people vote, the less room they will have to abuse your ballots”, she said.
Speaking in left leaning Centar, Siljanovska said that it is shocking how a new oligarchic elite showed up, centered around Zaev, whose rural manners were never accepted even among his own party supporters in the more urban Centar. Siljanovska, who herself comes from the center left, appealed to disappointed social – democrats.
It’s shocking to see social – democrats flaunt their enormous, newly gained wealth. They seem like they don’t know what to do with their money. Social – democrats should care about the welfare state, they should aim toward a more gentle sloping societal pyramid. And yet, we have 10 percent of excessively rich people at the top, and the middle is sliding down, Siljanovska said.
The allegations ring close to home, as Zaev’s family has been gleefully posting pictures from the beaches of Bali and Austrian ski resorts, and one of his cousins and a newly minted marijuana entrepreneur was photographed stopping his Maybach in a busy intersection while his loading bags of designer clothes in the trunk.
In return, in one of their oppo attacks on Siljanovska which spectacularly backfired, Zaev’s and Pendarovski’s team published a photograph of her easy going son playing the flute in a Skopje park for money and sharing the receipts with a few Roma street kids.
