Dragi Gjorgiev, the historian who leads the Macedonian team in the joint historic committee with Bulgaria, confirmed that the talks held over the past two days failed, without any progress being made. This was already revealed by the top Bulgarian representative, Angel Dimitrov, who described the talks as “fruitless”.

The stall in the work of the committee began in October 2019, when Bulgaria and its Parliament began to adopt various declarations and framework positions. We were trying to disassociate our work from politics and to conduct all negotiations in the spirit of academic understanding of the past. But, still, we work under a political context and we can’t avoid that, Gjorgiev said.
The failure to move forward on putting together a joint historic narrative means that Bulgaria is very unlikely to allow Macedonia to open its EU accession talks during the meeting of the European Council on December 14th.
