A major police operation is being conducted in the village of Aracinovo near Skopje. Official information is scarce, but witnesses are saying that a shoot-out occurred during the raid.
According to unofficial reports, the police seized a large quantity of drugs, as well as weapons. Aracinovo, one of the main flash-points of the Albanian insurgency in 2001, has long had a reputation as a lawless area and center of several powerful criminal gangs.
According to some speculation, the raid could be connected with the recent theft of several tons of marijuana from a plantation near Valandovo, in the south of the country. Marijuana growing has exploded under the Zaev regime, with the family and cronies of the Prime Minister deeply involved. While the drug is ostensibly grown for cannabis oil production and its export, it is widely rumored that the actual destination for the drug is the illegal market.
