Macedonian diplomacy has reached the bottom. This is the view of experts on the political scene after the names of the new consuls in the United States became known. For experts, this is not at all surprising if we know that since the coming to power of this government, only scandals with diplomats have taken place.
Narrow political interests and closeness to DUI have become the only criteria that will represent the country abroad. The public remembers well the scandal with the diplomats in Armenia, then the attempt to appoint Frckovski as ambassador to the US, then the attempt to make an amendment to the Law on Foreign Affairs where the heart should have been a condition for someone to be sent as a diplomat.
The appointment of TV presenter Besmira Ejupi and the son of political analyst Albert Musliu, who fiercely defends the government’s policies in debates, is just a continuation of such a practice.
Macedonia has not had ambassadors in key positions for a long time because the government and President Pendarovski cannot find a common language.
Appointing consuls is another procedure. They are proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in agreement with the Government. However, Article 49 of the Law on Foreign Affairs states that, as a rule, a diplomat with a high diplomatic title from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is appointed Consul General. As an exception, if he is not a career diplomat, then he should be an established person in the field of foreign policy and international relations. Ejupi and Musliu certainly are not that. But they will also need exequatur, ie approval from the host country.
Former diplomat Risto Nikovski believes that staff policy is the main condition of any country and that Macedonia behaves as if it deliberately wants to collapse on the international stage.
There is no other way to interpret the fact that in conditions when the main problems we face are of a diplomatic nature and our main embassies, including Bulgaria, are without ambassadors. It is more like a sabotage than a responsible policy. The latest case of electing a consul in New York only proves that the destruction of the Macedonian state is multidimensional, Nikovski explained to “Republika”.
