United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the decision by Macedonia and Greece to ratify the so-called Prespa treaty. Guterres was informed by both countries that they now consider the name dispute to be resolved and put behind them, with the adoption of the new name for Macedonia.

A Guterres spokesman confirmed that the Secretary General received the notification from Macedonia and Greece, and that he thanks mediator Matthew Nimetz and the Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras for their efforts. Guterres is also calling on all UN member states and international organizations to begin using the name “Republic of North Macedonia”, his spokesman Stefan Dujaric said.

According to he treaty, it is presumed that the issue is closed without asking that a new UN Security Council resolution is made. Two earlier resolutions were accepted by the Security Council. and according to one of them Macedonia was to be temporarily referred to as the “former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”. But, no attempts are being made to secure a third resolution, mandating the use of the new name.
