The draft law on state prosecutors prepared by the opposition VMRO-DPMNE party is based on a devastating analysis of the work of the current system, which is seen as completely inadequate.
The analysis reveals that the number of criminal charges prepared by state prosecutors have dropped by tremendous 35.3 percent. Only 408 individuals faced charges initiated by the prosecutors.
This is worrying data, which shows that despite growing crime and corruption, especially the worst forms of high level organized crime, the number of charges drops significantly, VMRO-DPMNE said in the analysis.
Reports of growing crime and inactivity on the part of the prosecutors are confirmed by the growth of criminal charges initiated by citizens, but the prosecutors have rejected 45.5 percent of these. Additional 43.7 percent of the cases have remained unresolved.
Meanwhile, the backlog of older reported cases with unknown perpetrators stands at whopping 117.139, and in 2019, 17.720 of these cases have been thrown out because of the statute of limitations.
The OJO prosecutors’ service is understaffed by 28 percent below its projections, and has less than 200 prosecutors. The situation is especially dire with regard to the staff that helps the prosecutors. Only 365 staff out of the projected 1.126 people have been hired.
