Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Turkey is offering to send a ship to Berdyansk to evacuate wounded and the bodies of killed from the besieged port city of Mariupol.

The city is under siege for weeks, with the Russian forces holding Ukrainian army and nationalist units holed up. Russian offers of evacuation were rejected by most of the fighters, who fear an ambush.

Zelenskyy said that he spoke with Turkish President Erdogan, who spoke with the Russian President Putin, leaving the evacuation proposal now to Putin’s approval.
