Interim Interior Minister Nake Culev announced that he will conduct an emergency investigation into the contract signed with a German company for the purchase of new passports worth nearly 20 million EUR. Vecer yesterday reported numerous violations in the contract, which indicate foul play.

After media outlets reported on the passport procurement contract, I can confirm that the Interior Ministry is already conducting an internal investigation which will determine whether there is possible abuse in the deal. All that is determined will be presented before the public, Culev said.

The violations include possible back-dating of reports linked to the procurement, unlawful payment of funds to the German Veridos company and the overall haste in which the deal was approved shortly before Culev was appointed as caretaker Minister.
