The German DPA news agency also reports that France intends to block the opening of EU accession talks with Macedonia and Albania in October. This was also reported by Reuters yesterday, and will possibly feature as an issue during a planned meeting between Merkel and Macron on Sunday, before the European Council next week.

DPA quotes an unnamed European diplomat in Brussels who says he hopes Paris will reconsider its decision and will not find itself isolated on this issue. Germany approved the opening of accession talks with both countries in October, while the Netherlands and Denmark are open only to Macedonia beginning the talks. Other countries are seen as largely positive to both Macedonia and Albania, with the caveat that Greece and Bulgaria don’t want to see the two countries decoupled.
