The new political situation in Greece has shaken hopes for the EU. After the political party SYRIZA of incumbent Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has lost the European Parliament elections, and it is more certain that he will lose the race for mayoral positions in the two largest Greek bastions, Athens and Thessaloniki, hopes that the country could get support from the southern neighbor for the expected Euro-integration fade. According to the experts, it is already clear that in the announced early elections in June, Tsipras will lose power in Greece, reports Alfa TV.
Although Greece has already ratified the NATO accession protocol, Professor Donev says that it is not excluded the possibility of New Democracy leader Mitsotaki, as soon as he comes to power, asking his allies in the Alliance, who have not yet ratified the protocol, to block Macedonia’s bid.
With a difference of almost 10 percent over SYRIZA, Greece’s largest opposition party, New Democracy is the winner in Sunday’s EU elections in Greece. The party won 7 seats in the European Parliament, while SYRIZA won 6 seats.
The opposition in Greece, apart from the EU elections, is in the lead in the local elections, and has already won five Greek peripherals in the first round. Their candidate for mayor leads in Athens, where New Democracy won over 42% of the vote. In Thessaloniki, the opposition leads with more than 22% of the vote, and the ruling SYRIZA has barely 13%.
Unofficially, June 30 is mentioned as a possible date for holding early parliamentary elections in Greece.
