During a visit to Sveti Nikole, VMRO-DPMNE President Hristijan Mickoski responded to Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel’s statements. He echoed Gabriel’s view, emphasizing that constitutional amendments weren’t the sole requirement for progress. Mickoski highlighted the ruling party’s agreement as the start of forthcoming problems due to lack of societal support and opposition consultation.
He criticized the project’s objectives—prime ministership aspirations, riches amassed at the expense of citizens—and pledged VMRO-DPMNE’s commitment to resolving ensuing issues alongside Macedonian citizens once a new government forms.
Mickoski urged for dignified discussions for a solution once the government changes hands, stressing the need to halt the prolonged challenges to Macedonia’s identity caused by neighboring policies.
Referring to Bulgaria, Mickoski underscored the importance of removing the veto obstructing Macedonia’s negotiations for EU membership, citing the need for rational leadership within the EU.
On the other hand, Bulgarian Deputy PM Mariya Gabriel clarified Bulgaria’s stance, affirming no bilateral problems with Macedonia regarding EU integration. She outlined additional requirements beyond constitutional amendments, citing compliance with the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, Cooperation, and two associated protocols.
Gabriel highlighted the need for Macedonia’s progress in other areas if challenges persist in adopting constitutional changes, noting the lack of advancement following technical meetings held in Sofia and Skopje.
