Saraj Mayor Blerim Bexheti dismissed the investigation launched by the Anti-Corruption Commission (DKSK) against him, saying he will take them to court.
DKSK announced a series of investigations on Monday, including one against Bexheti for allegedly slow-rolling a decision that could have stopped the construction of two unlawfully built platforms in the Matka canyon. Bexheti said he feels no guilt in the case and that he thinks he is being named by the Commission to distract the public from other scandals.
The platforms are expected to be used as floating restaurants by their politically tied owners. They filed a request with the municipality to have the platforms legalized, and a quick negative decision would have prompted an order to have them demolished. But DKSK claims that Bexheti delayed making the decision, allowing the two platforms to be completed.
Matka is one of the best loved tourist attractions in the capital and accommodation is at a premium there. Given the political clout of Bexheti’s ruling DUI party, Skopje Mayor Petre Silegov washed his hands off the case, and it is currently unlikely that the platforms will be torn down.
