On the first day of March, tradition across Macedonia and parts of the Balkans calls that people wear a martinka – an intertwined string of red and white.

This tradition dates to pre-Christian times, and is linked with the holiday of Xantika – the celebration of spring. Usually, the oldest woman in the family ties the martinka to the children and it is believed to bring them health and happiness.
