The Culture Ministry has earmarked Mden 1.8 million (EUR 30,000) to support the Vevchani Carnival, marking a significant commitment to one of North Macedonia’s oldest and pioneering cultural events. Culture Minister Bisera Kostadinovska-Stojchevska and Vevchani Mayor Spase Kochovski formalized the funding agreement on Wednesday.

In recent years, administrative hurdles led to the Ministry withholding financial aid for the Carnival. Minister Kostadinovska-Stojchevska clarified that previous delays in funding were due to procedural constraints. To prevent future interruptions, she proposed establishing a more efficient mechanism to ensure consistent state support for the carnival.

Highlighting the cultural significance of the Vevchani Carnival, the Minister emphasized its unique local charm, creativity, and critical yet humorous portrayal of societal issues. She underlined the event’s growing international appeal, attributing this to the region’s distinctive spirit and the hospitality of its people.

The Culture Ministry remains committed not only to supporting the carnival but also to nurturing the local tradition through educational initiatives. One such project, “The Epic of Orthodox New Year,” involves creating the first mural to immortalize the carnival’s heritage.

Mayor Kochovski expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the significance of continuous backing for one of Europe’s oldest carnival celebrations. With Vevchani being one of the country’s smallest municipalities, the mayor highlighted the importance of such financial aid and hoped for increased support from other sponsors.

He reiterated the carnival’s centuries-old tradition of humor and satire, clarifying its intent to depict social and global situations without causing offense or harm.
