A Bulgarian citizen who attempted to transport eight Iraqi migrants from Macedonia into Serbia was detained for 30 days.

The man picked up the migrants in Solun/Thessaloniki, and managed to smuggle them into Macedonia hidden in a specially made compartment in top of his van. The group crossed through Macedonia, but police found the migrants when the Bulgarian driver was attempting to take them into Serbia, through the Tabanovce border crossing.

Macedonia lies on the Balkan migrant route and its closure of the border with Greece was crucial in stopping the great migrant crisis in 2016. Still, smaller groups like this one continue to travel across daily.
