A photograph of Katica Janeva, sitting at the tiny balcony of her son’s apartment in downtown Skopje, was shared this morning on the social media networks. After months of virtually no pictures leaking while the disgraced former Special Prosecutor was in prison, it took only a day a picture to be snapped at her new court mandated location, where she is staying in house arrest.

The apartment is just across the initial headquarters of her Special Prosecutor’s Office, where thousands of leftist protesters would gather in 2016, demanding that Janeva delivers justice against what they claimed were corrupt Government officials from the right. Now Janeva is herself charged with unprecedented levels of corruption and abuse of office as she filed criminal charges against businessmen she would then target for extortion.

The lack of any photo evidence that she is really detained, the evasive answers given by her ally who was appointed prison warden and her head to toe disguise as she was transported into house arrest fueled numerous conspiracy theories, chief among them that Janeva is kept elsewhere, even outside of Macedonia, as she is negotiating a deal with the Zaev regime. She is believed to know a lot of damaging information about Zaev’s Colored Revolution days, and the selection of political targets for her persecution. But, now it has been at least confirmed that she is currently holed in a dilapidated building in central Skopje.

The court did not ask for a financial guarantee from Janeva that she won’t use her limited release to flee the country. In its ruling, which sparked a fierce feud with Janeva’s once ally and now nemesis prosecutor Vilma Ruskoska, the court described her as a single mother, unemployed (after she was dismissed in disgrace from her position, without property (?) and in need of medical attention. In response, news sites published reports that, based on publicly available data, that Janeva claimed 157.000 EUR above her sizable salary, over the nearly four years she was head of the “elite” prosecutorial unit. The money were paid in the so-called “confidentiality bonus” which SPO employees received given the dangerous nature of their job. Not to mention the leaks from the investigation alleging that Janeva has been filmed taking huge bribes delivered in designer hand-bags, and even allegedly took a photo with the loot in gangsta rap video style.
