Kanal 5 TV confirms the existence of a “slush fund” at the Special Prosecutor’s Office, set up by disgraced former Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva, who is now trying to use up the money.

According to the report, the better paid SPO employees had to give 50 EUR each month into the fund, while those with lower salaries would pay 1.000 denars (15 EUR) – all for a “rainy day”. And it’s pouring at the SPO and especially over Janeva.

The fund was filled on Janeva’s orders and she controlled the funds. We have no idea how much is left. Each month all prosecutors, and down to the last employee, had to pay, an SPO prosecutor told Kanal 5.

The fund now amounts to 80.000 EUR and Janeva reportedly sent another letter to the SPO, demanding that the money is used for her defense fund. SPO prosecutors say that the money were given for weddings of the employees, who were famously selected based on their kinship.

In some instances, the “slush fund” was used for repairs in the SPO offices, but also to purchase IT equipment. Janeva would sign off on the purchases, so now that she is detained, the money is blocked. It is unclear whether Janeva has the authority to collect the money for her defense lawyer Irena Frckoska, now that she is both detained and dismissed from her position, just as it was highly dubious that she can order giving up the SPO cases to the OJO office of state prosecutors. Frckoska said she is not informed whether Janeva requested that the money is used for her defense.
