A Skopje court ordered that Stevco Jakimovski, former Mayor of Karpos and leader of the opposition GROM party, is sent to house arrest. Jakimovski was arrested this morning, along with seven other Karpos employees, over allegations of abuse of office regarding a real-estate procedure he approved.

Jakimovski is the latest opposition official to be arrested in Zoran Zaev’s systematic prosecution of critical voices in the country. His GROM party is in coalition with VMRO-DPMNE and came out in support of the opposition presidential candidate Gordana Siljanovska. Besides VMRO-DPMNE officials, who face almost daily arrests, prosecutors have also detained officials from the opposition Socialist Party, which, like GROM, is allied with VMRO-DPMNE and support Siljanovska.

Jakimovski was attacked by Sead Rahic, accused drug dealer and brother of former official of Zaev’s SDSM party Esad Rahic, on the eve of the 2017 municipal elections.
