Gajur Kadriu, the recently dismissed director of the state owned Macedonian Roads company, signed a contract worth 5.6 million EUR literally on his last day in office.

The contract is signed with the Ilinden company from Struga, which will supply asphalt. This is believed to be the largest single procurement contract signed by Macedonian Roads since 2008.
The state owned company would normally receive just one bid for its contracts, and most of them went to a Skopje based company named KI EM. This time, the contract went to the Struga based company, and the day of the signing – just as Kadriu was about to leave office, raised eyebrows.

Kadriu was removed as part of Zoran Zaev’s promise to purge his most incompetent and corrupt Government officials. He was replaced with a Zaev loyalist named Zoran Kitanov, who used to manage the gas distribution company in Zaev’s stronghold of Strumica.
