Macedonian diaspora organizations are condemning Bulgaria for its pressure against Macedonia, after it violated one of its key articles of the 2017 Zaev – Borisov treaty and blocked the opening of EU accession talks with Macedonia.

Macedonians across the world bitterly denounce any future “treaties” with Sofia that would explicitly demand rewriting our history and erasing the centuries old Macedonian historic uniqueness, said that United Macedonian Diaspora. “Bulgaria has been dangling its EU-member veto power to aggressively pressure Macedonia to acquiesce to the erasure of Bulgaria’s fascist past. Not to mention Bulgaria’s belittling of the Macedonian language as a “Bulgarian dialect” and the claiming of Macedonian national heroes as their own”, UMD added.

The Coordinative body of Macedonians across the world condemned the European Union for going along with the Bulgarian blackmail and pressuring Macedonia to give up on its national identity.

We call on the European Union to respect our right to exist as Macedonians, and to respect our right to value our own history and nurture our language. Identity issues must not be subject to negotiations. They are individual rights and come above any state or party, the Coordinative body said, calling for an end to unanimous decision making in the EU which was used by Greece, and now by Bulgaria, to pressure Macedonia.
