The meeting between Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel in Paris ended with no word on whether the two discussed EU enlargement.
Macedonia and Albania hope to be allowed to open EU accession talks this week, but France remains adamantly opposed, demanding a complete reorganization of the enlargement process. The two Balkan countries were hoping that German Chancellor Merkel will use her visit to Paris to push Macron on the issue.
But, given the long list of other crises which are maturing or erupting at the moment, including Brexit and the war in Syria, the enlargement issue was not even mentioned during the press statements. Merkel and Macron will meet again ahead of the European Council.
