In the Macedonian Parliament, Speaker Talat Xhaferi ended the debate on the highly controversial proposal to have a loyalist of the Zaev regime, judge Dobrila Kacarska, appointed to the Constitutional Court. The proposal comes at a time when Zaev’s campaign of persecution against the opposition is being examined by the Constitutional Court and Kacarska’s voice could allow him to continue his abuse of the judiciary for political gains.

Xhaferi said that he can’t put the proposal to a vote yet since it requires at least 61 votes. Zaev’s SDSM – DUI – BESA coalition has 62, but with some of them absent for business or health issues (corona) and one possibly even about to face war crimes charges, there were not enough representatives in the Parliament to venture a vote.

The opposition VMRO-DPMNE party was willing to help provide the necessary quorum for the normal functioning of the country, such as for adopting changes to the 2020 budget, but it will not support Kacarska. During the debate, Its representative Igor Janusev said that the nomination of Kacarska is meant to be her reward for the unprecedented “terrorism trial” and lengthy sentences of more than a decade in prison she handed to protesters over the April 2017 incident in the Parliament.

We will help you provide the quorum. Release the patriots from prison and I will vote for her. The trial was pure politics anyway, Janusev said, reminding the body how the trial Kacarska presided over was used to blackmail three VMRO members of Parliament to vote in favor of the imposed name change.
