Police stopped a truck driven by a 26 year old man from Skopje, who was transportting 48 migrants.
The truck was stopped near Gevgelija, close to the border with Greece, where the driver picked the migrants up, and was likely planning to take them to the border with Serbia.
There were 38 migrants from Pakistan and 10 more from Bangladesh in the bus. The driver tried to flee, but was arrested shortly after.
Macedonia is one the Balkan route, that carries migrants from Turkey through Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia into the more prosperous core EU countries. Macedonian authorities closed the border with Greece to unregulated entries in 2016, ending the large migrant crisis during which up to 10.000 people would cross in a day, but smaller groups continue to make the trip hiring local smugglers.
