The government must ensure citizens’ cyber security and introduce new safety measures across the entire IT infrastructure in the country, Minister of Information Society and Administration Jeton Shaqiri said on Tuesday.

Addressing the 17th Conference “Democracy in the Digital Age: Challenges and Opportunities” organized by the Metamorphosis Foundation, he said that freedom of expression, freedom of the media and protection of media pluralism were paramount to democracy.

But on the other hand, he said, there are big challenges, such as spreading fake news. Therefore, according to the Minister, critical thinking and media literacy are the most important tools we can use in the fight against information manipulation, fake news, false reporting, misinformation, propaganda, fraud.

Shaqiri also referred to the efforts and activities undertaken by the Ministry of Information Society and Administration and the Government in the field of digitization, as well as the challenges related to the development of technologies.
