Leaders from various parliamentary political parties, including SDSM-led coalition, DUI, Alliance of Albanians, VMRO-DPMNE-led coalition, Levica, and European Alliance for Change, are scheduled to convene in Parliament on Monday at noon. The primary agenda of this meeting revolves around discussions pertaining to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, EU integration, the Electoral Code, and the prospect of a caretaker government. Expected to attend is Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi.
Among the key focal points, the leaders aim to reach consensus on the scheduling of the presidential and parliamentary elections, leaning towards a likely date in May as indicated by prominent party heads in recent public statements. The potential runoff for the presidential elections and the parliamentary polls may fall on May 8, with the initial round of presidential voting occurring on April 24.
SDSM leader and Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski has emphasized the importance of addressing EU integration, determining the election timetable, and aligning the Electoral Code with recommendations from OSCE/ODIHR during this gathering. Notably, VMRO-DPMNE has agreed to participate in the meeting, emphasizing their readiness to finalize the election date, endorse the OSCE/ODIHR guidelines, and advocate for the dissolution of the caretaker government alongside the appointment of a Prime Minister nominated by DUI.
DUI’s Foreign Minister and spokesperson, Bujar Osmani, stressed the significance of discussing constitutional amendments at this meeting, asserting a timeline of “six months at the latest” for their realization. Osmani also mentioned the possibility of Speaker Xhaferi being nominated by DUI for the caretaker PM position, though the party will make a decision on this matter later in the week, as per his statement to Sitel.
