Prime Minister Zoran Zaev will appoint Muhamed Zekiri, the leader of the Albanian wing in his SDSM party, as Secretary General of the Government.

Zekiri will replace Dragi Raskovski, who faced numerous corruption allegations during Zaev’s first term. Zekiri has become one of Zaev’s most trusted advisers, and was rumored to be in play for some very lucrative positions, such as head of FZOM healthcare fund or the PIOM retirement fund, but his lack of formal education, having attended a Islamic madrassa for high school, is hampering his career.

The former journalist has a running feud with SDSM’s key coalition partner DUI and it’s unclear if he can manage the Government where DUI and especially its official Artan Grubi wield serious influence.
