It’s fortunate that all 379 passengers and crew aboard a plane that caught fire while landing at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport are safe, as confirmed by Japan Airlines (JAL). However, reports indicate a tragic outcome for the collision between this plane and a Japanese coastguard aircraft, resulting in the loss of five lives from the coastguard plane. Among the casualties, the pilot of the coastguard aircraft sustained serious injuries.
The incident involved Flight 516, a commercial plane originating from Hokkaido in northern Japan, which caught fire upon landing and eventually burned out entirely on the runway. All 367 passengers and 12 crew members managed to evacuate the aircraft safely.
Reports suggest that the coastguard aircraft was transporting materials to the earthquake-stricken area on the west coast, where a series of earthquakes since New Year’s Day has claimed at least 48 lives. Images from TBS depict the passengers using emergency slides to disembark while firefighting efforts were underway, followed by the sighting of an explosive fireball.
