France’s Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau has reportedly resigned in response to the contentious immigration law adopted by parliament, as per reports from Le Figaro and Le Parisien late on Tuesday. It remains uncertain whether Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne has accepted his resignation.
Rousseau, representing the left wing of the government, opposed the stricter legislation passed on Tuesday, reflecting divisions within President Emmanuel Macron’s centre-right government.
The immigration law debate caused internal fractures, prompting attempts at compromise by a commission of parliamentarians and senators after the opposition rejected the government’s initial proposal last week.
In pursuit of securing conservative approval, the government has made substantial concessions, sparking dissatisfaction among its own left-leaning members. Several of Macron’s party members voted against the bill.
The government’s goal with this law is to enhance immigration control and foster better integration. Prior to the parliamentary vote, speculations arose about potential resignations from several ministers within the left wing of the government.
