Bulgaria announced it will not renew its contract with Gazprom for deliveries of Russian gas, and that it will look for other suppliers, Finance Minister Asen Vasilev said.
Bulgaria receives all of its gas from Russia, and has a 10 year contract that expires at the end of 2022. It already gave up on developing the Belene nuclear plant with Russia under US pressure, but eventually cooperated with Russia on the Turkish Stream gas pipeline. It’s unclear whether its new policy would mean closing off this pipeline as well.
Serbia already warned about a disaster for the region if the pipeline is cut. The Balkans are normally supplied through the Russian pipelines that go through Ukraine, and Turkish Stream is now the main alternative.
