Talks between SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE on the competing proposals for a law on state prosecutors failed today. Both Justice Minister Renata Deskoska, who represented SDSM, and VMRO member of Parliament Antonio Milososki declared the talks a failure and said that there are fundamental differences between the ruling coalition and the opposition.

Deskoska said that the differences are oer the process of appointing the next Special Prosecutor, but also over whether there should be a new special unit. Deskoska declared the situation a done deal after the cases initiated by the now disgraced Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva were given to the OJO service of prosecutors, which is seen as completely under the political control of the Government. But, faced with numerous legal challenges to this move, the ruling party came back to the negotiating table with VMRO.

Milososki reminded Deskoska that all such complex and systemic laws were adopted with a 2/3 majority in Parliament. VMRO demands that the new prosecutor, tasked with investigating high level crimes and corruption, is nominated by the opposition as the only guarantee that he would be able to fully investigate the major racketeering scandal sparked by Janeva.
