Following public outcry, the bureau charged with issuing birth certificates informed that it will begin printing certificates in which the citizenship will be listed as “Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia”, a phrase specifically detailed in the Prespa treaty to declare the Macedonian nationality.

The outrage was caused after a number of people reported that newly issued birth certificates simply have a few forward slashes – “/////” – in the place where the word “Macedonian” used to be for citizenship. According to the bureau, they had technical issues while adjusting to the change.

The Zaev Government insists that the definition of nationality cover ethnic identity as well, and that the word “Macedonian” will be used for the ethnicity of the Macedonians. Greece, on the other hand, insists that what was agreed was the use of the term “Macedonian” for citizenship only, and even that in the lengthy form – “Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia”.
