A Kosovan citizen was caught on Monday evening transporting 39 migrants north on the E-75 highway near Gevgelija.
Police tried to stop a truck near the village of Prdejci, and the driver attempted to flee north on the highway. Shortly after the police managed to stop the Kosovan and found migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and India in the truck. Four of the Pakistanis were minors.
The smuggler is detaind and will be sent before a judge today. Macedonia is a key link on the Balkan migrant route which takes migrants from the Middle East and central Asia toward Western Europe. Uncontrolled transfer along the route was stopped in 2016, after the year and a half long crisis, but the route is still being used by smugglers who charge the migrants in Greece to take them north toward Austria and Germany.
