Eurostat data reveal that 24.000 people moved out of Macedonia last year into European Union countries. This amounts to 2.1 percent of the total population, which puts us in third place in the Balkans as a percentage of lost population, behind Kosovo and Albania.
Nearly half of all who moved out of Macedonia for the EU now live in Germany (11.500), Eurostat reports.
A total of 228.000 people from the Balkans moved to the EU in 2018. Albania leads the list with 62.000 emigrants, followed by Bosnia with 53.000 and Serbia with 51.000 people. Kosovo lost 34.500 of its citizens to the EU. Only Montenegro can say that it has the emigration issue under control as just 3.000 people moved out of the country for the EU.
