Next week it’s possible that the leaders of the main political parties will meet to discuss the law on state prosecutors, Republika has learnt.
Talks between the ruling SDSM party and the opposition VMRO-DPMNE on the fate of the disgraced Special Prosecutor’s Office have been stuck for months, as a major corruption scandal brought down Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva. Prime Minister Zoran Zaev announced unilateral steps, and it’s possible that Janeva is doing just that, with the letters sent from prison in which she ordered that all SPO case files are given to the larger OJO office of prosecutors, and her subsequent resignation submitted today. This is largely seen to be in violation of the law, which should be altered with the approval of two thirds of the members of Parliament to ensure that all major parties agree to systemic decisions such as those that regard the judiciary.
