The US State Department told Voice of America that it is following developments in Macedonia after Zoran Zaev announced he will resign as Prime Minister and SDSM party leader, following his total defeat in the local elections.
The State Department said that it considers Macedonia as a trustworthy and valued partner in the region and looks forward to continuing its cooperation with the Government in areas of mutual interest, while advancing progress in Euro-Atlantic integrations.
Zaev said that he will resign as soon as he organizes a successor Government from the same slim majority coalition he now has, but given past experience with such announcements from him it should be taken with a grain of salt. Zaev also has a habit of threatening to resign in order to mobilize politicians in the US and the EU to come to his aid in domestic political fights.
