Former spy chief Zoran Verusevski, who is believed to have been the main perpetrator of both the 2000 and 2015 wiretapping scandals, which plunged Macedonia into dramatic security crises and led to constitutional redefining of the country, is seeking 70.000 EUR in damages from the state.
Verusevski, who is currently Zaev’s security adviser, claims that he suffered from distress after he was arrested in early 2015 for carrying out the wiretapping of Government officials. The tapes which officers of the UBK intelligence service, who coordinated with Verusevski, were given to Zoran Zaev, who used them in his campaign to grab power in Macedonia. Verusevski spent most of 2015 in detention, charged with his role in a coup attempt and he is now claiming restitution after the charges were dropped by another Zaev loyalist – now disgraced Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva.
Verusevski recently sought to distance himself from the wiretapping and acknowledged that the recordings were “heavily modified” to meet Zaev’s political goals.
