Macedonia name issue negotiator Matthew Nimetz called on Greece to ratify the deal under which Macedonia would be renamed into North Macedonia. The Macedonian Parliament already ratified the deal, after a number of members of Parliament were threatened with criminal charges, and despite President Ivanov’s refusal to sign it, it was sent to Greece as ratified.
The Greek Parliament began discussion last week, prompting a major protest on Sunday, and should vote on it by the end of this week.
According to Nimetz, with the notification from Macedonia that the deal has been ratified, the country has met its obligations under the so-called Prespa treaty, and it is now up to Greece to ratify it. Nimetz adds that he will remain dedicated to the process and will cooperate with both countries to finally resolve the decades long issue.
