Spain will have early parliamentary elections on April 28, Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Friday, days after the rejection of his government’s budget proposal sparked a legislative crisis.
“Spain doesn’t have a minute to lose. Spain has to move ahead,” he said.
The decision comes after his minority government failed to push through a budget and just eight months after he took office. His conservative predecessor, Mariano Rajoy, was pushed out after losing a confidence vote.
Elections had not been scheduled to take place until June 2020.
