Prime Minister Zoran Zaev again tried to disguise his push for marijuana legalization as a progressive, liberal policy. Zaev’s own brother Vice recently acknowledged the “worst kept secret” that the Zaev family invested heavily in marijuana plantations and companies, but the Prime Minister keeps insisting that he sees the legalization push not as something that would further enrich the ruling family.

I have never tried a joint, but to support some cause you don’t have to have a personal benefit to support a cause. I’m a Macedonian but I support Albanian rights. I’m straight but I support LGBTI rights. I’m not poor, but I support rights for the poor, Zaev said in a social media message.

The frantic issuing of marijuana growing licenses under Zaev, often to his cronies, is leading to a spike in crime, with two recent serious incidents of theft of marijuana from plantations where it is grown allegedly for cannabis oil extraction. In one instance the police had to embark on a dangerous raid in a notoriously lawless area near Skopje to retrieve just a small portion of the two tons of marijuana stolen from a company registered in Zaev’s stronghold of Strumica.
