Faced with the danger of serious racketeering charges, and deserted by the once fawning politicians, journalists and even closest colleagues, disgraced Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva blamed her associate Bojan Jovanovski – Boki 13 for the extortion of money from businessmen. Janeva insisted that Boki 13, but also unspecified others, abused her good name.
But, in doing so, she also acknowledged a serious direct link between her and Boki 13. Her son Lazar Janev was hired by Boki 13’s 1TV television, practically straight out of university, and appointed to a top position in the newly created television. Media outlets claimed that Boki 13 would bring Lazar Janev along during his frequent visits to businessmen, where the two would allegedly demand money threatening the owners of the businesses with criminal charges from Katica Janeva, or promising to drop already filed charges.
I know Bojan Jovanovski, and I’ve never concealed the fact that my son works in 1TV, and that he communicates with Jovanovski daily, which is the nature of his job, but that doesn’t mean that someone gained the right to use my office to achieve privileges or the perpetrate illegal actions, Janeva said during her press statement today.
Shortly before, it was revealed that a phone, which she told the police was “lost”, was in fact being used by Lazar’s girlfriend, and is currently being investigated. Lazar also reportedly told the police that the device is lost, adding that it happened in Belgrade, which now appears as an attempt to throw the police off the scent. Lazar’s personal computer he used in 1TV was seized by the police and it is being investigated whether he was involved in extortion attempts.
Janeva herself said that she received word that Boki 13 was abusing her name, but so did many other people. This statement, which was the one specific piece of new information she provided today, was given immediately after she acknowledged that her son works with Boki 13. Neither Janeva nor her son are currently indicted, but his mother’s statement puts Lazar Janev in a serious legal jeopardy as the pressure to expand the investigation grows.
