Analyses have shown that vapors of the toxic substance methyl acrylate was found in the pipes of the chemical tank which burst late last week, causing a panic around the OHIS chemical plant in Skopje.
Stip university experts examined the area and determined that the chemical was present in the spilled water, which was used to wash the tank. Toxic vapors were discovered within the tank, but not on the outside.
Citizens reacted with high anxiety after an acrid smell began to spread around OHIS on Friday, and the army had to be called in to examine the site where tons of water mixed with the chemical spilled into a concrete pool. The authorities later assured the public that there is no danger for the public health from the spread of the chemical that was kept in an antiquated tank.
